US Coast Guard investigating oil slick off Chandeleur Islands near Biloxi

The U.S. Coast Guard’s New Orleans sector received a report of an oil slick near the Chandeleur Islands off the Mississippi Gulf Coast on Saturday afternoon.

“The Coast Guard is actively investigating a report of an oil slick observed on the surface of the water off of the Chandeleur Islands near Biloxi,” Riley Perkofski, Coast Guard public affairs officer, confirmed to the Sun Herald in an email.

The slick was reported by a boater.

An oil slick is defined as a layer of oil floating on a body of water after accidentally coming out of a ship or container.

The Coast Guard did not say how large the slick was or if any wildlife or sea life would be affected.

The Chandeleur Islands are about 40 miles from Biloxi in the Gulf of Mexico and are a popular spot for charter fishing.
