Six people were hospitalized Monday after a vehicle pileup on Interstate 10 in Pass Christian involving four cars and an 18-wheeler, a Harrison County fire official said.

Pat Sullivan, Harrison County Fire Rescue chief, said one victim was taken away from the scene by medical helicopter near the Menge Avenue exit, or mile marker 24.

At one point Monday afternoon, all lanes of traffic on the interstate were blocked so the helicopter could land and get the victim to a hospital for treatment

Traffic delays on the interstate were reported for hours until the site was cleared, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

In addition to Fire Rescue, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol, American Medical Response ambulance serve and the Combat Readiness Training Center responded to the scene.

A second incident also caused delays near the same exit on Monday afternoon.

Crews worked to put out a camper fire in the westbound lanes.

No injures were reported, Sullivan said.
