Are you willing to pay to cross a new Popp’s Ferry bridge in Biloxi? Take our survey.
Biloxi is considering a $150 million new Popp’s Ferry Road bridge that would replace the current one build decades ago.
The current two-lane drawbridge often gets stuck and is known for traffic congestion at peak rush hours. The new construction would be four lanes and would be elevated.
To pay for the bridge, the city is considering a toll. There could be a daily fee, or those who travel the bridge daily would have a monthly pay option.
The bridge could be built in about four years, and the cost could rise if the city doesn’t act soon, officials said.
The idea of placing a toll on the bridge has been polarizing for local residents, many who have expressed concerns or frustrations on social media.
The Popp’s Ferry bridge has also been a hot topic in the Sun Herald Sound Off section since the news became public in November.
Many see a new bridge as an opportunity for economic growth in Biloxi, while others are against paying a toll to drive over it, especially those who rely on it to get to and from their homes.
