‘A hot rivalry’ and ‘fireworks:’ See MS Coast high school football scores for Week 2
Kaden Irving tossed six touchdown passes and ran for another as Gautier won a wild 52-41 victory over Pascagoula on Friday night at Pascagoula.
Irving threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter as the Gators (2-0) took a 23-14 lead but the Panthers scored three times in the second quarter to take a 35-23 halftime lead.
“It’s a hot rivalry and any time these two teams get together there’s a lot of fireworks,” said Gautier coach Marc High. “Kade was able to go through his progressions and hit the open spots, and our offensive line was able to keep him clean for the most part.”
Irving scored on a 3-yard run and added the two-point conversion early in the third quarter to narrow the Panthers’ margin to 35-31, then added touchdown passes of 36 yards to Aaron Phillips and 62 yards to Aydan Morgan to give Gautier the lead for good.
Jonathan Mansfield scored on a 60-yard run for Pascagoula (0-1) early in the fourth quarter to close the gap, but Irving connected with Dillon Alfred for a 60-yard touchdown pass with five minutes to play in the game to salt away the victory for the Gators.
For the game, Irving passed for 485 yards, with Phillips getting six catches for 166 yards and two scores. Morgan added 10 receptions for 131 yards.
Gautier has an open date next week, while Pascagoula will hit the road to face Wayne County.
Escambia (Fla.) 35, Gulfport 28, OT
Waymond Jordan ran for four touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime, as Escambia outlasted the Admirals at Pensacola, Fla.
Jacob Palazzo connected with Tavaris Henshaw for a 25-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, but Gulfport (1-1) trailed at halftime 13-7.
Palazzo ran for a 3-yard touchdown early in the third quarter to give the Admirals a 14-13 lead, but Jordan scored twice in the period for Escambia to take a 28-14 lead heading into the final period.
Bishop Magruder’s 20-yard touchdown run got Gulfport on the comeback trail early in the fourth quarter, and Tyler Reed tied it up with a 3-yard scoring run with two minutes remaining in regulation.
The Admirals had a chance to win at the buzzer after getting the ball back but missed a field goal. Gulfport will return home next week to face Picayune.
East Central 21, Moss Point 20
Andrew Marble capped a wild fourth quarter with a 7-yard touchdown run in the final minute of play, and Brady Fant ran for the conversion to give the Hornets the victory at Hurley.
Ladarius Matthews hit Kiki Ford for a 15-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to give Moss Point (0-2) a 6-0 halftime lead. Eli Smith’s 4-yard run for East Central (1-1) made it 6-6 heading into the final period.
Smith scored on a 3-yard run early in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers scored on two touchdown passes, plus a successful PAT run, for a 20-13 lead, setting up Marble’s last-minute heroics.
East Central will be at home next week to face South Pike, while the Tigers host Vancleave.
Ocean Springs 43, Hattiesburg 8
Bray Hubbard threw four touchdown passes as the Greyhounds raced to a 43-0 halftime lead and cruised past the Tigers at Ocean Springs.
David Humphries scored two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter to stake Ocean Springs (2-0) to a 14-0 lead.
Hubbard threw touchdown passes of 40 and 28 yards to Evan McNally, a 45-yard touchdown pass to J.P. Coulter and a touchdown pass to Holton White on the final play of the first half.
Hubbard finished with 190 yards passing and Humphries ran for 124 yards to lead the Greyhounds.
The Greyhounds will make their first road trip of the season next week to battle George County.
Sumrall 41, Bay High 14
John Ford threw four touchdown passes and ran for another as the Bobcats rolled past the Tigers at Sumrall.
Ford completed 14 of 26 passes for 299 yards, and Cade Dedeaux had six catches for 166 yards and three touchdown receptions to lead Sumrall (1-0). Noah Cutter ran for 106 yards on 21 carries and both touchdowns for Bay High (1-1).
Bay High will return home next week to play Long Beach.
D’Iberville 48, Petal 26
The Warriors rushed for 359 yards and rolled over the Panthers at Petal.
Kole Davis ran for 121 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown for D’Iberville (2-0), and Drey Lenoir added 71 yards on 13 runs and three TDs. Gabe Greene led the Warriors on defense with nine tackles.
The Warriors will make their home debut next week against Jefferson Davis County.
Pass Christian 30, Forrest County AHS 20
Kameron White ran for 154 yards on 13 carries and threw two touchdown passes to lead the Pirates to a season-opening victory at Brooklyn.
Xavier Chamberlain led the Pirates on defense with 17 tackles, including five for loss, and Pass Christian had four sacks. FCAHS dropped to 0-2.
Pass Christian will host Purvis next week.
West Harrison 42, Southeast Lauderdale 6
The Hurricanes rolled to a 35-0 halftime lead and coasted to their first victory of the season at Gulfport.
West Harrison (1-1) will play at home next week against St. Helena College and Career Academy out of Louisiana.
