An estimated 80,000 people turned out for a cool and cloudy Mardi Gras as the Gulf Coast Carnival Association rolled in downtown Biloxi on Fat Tuesday.

There were 112 floats for the organization’s 112th year, including one for the king, queen and royal court.

“It’s good share this with the community, to see everyone today, and so lucky to be from a place that celebrates Mardi Gras like this,” said Queen Ixolib Abbie Elizabeth Brashier.

King d’Iberville John William Atherton also said he was excited to share the beautiful day with all the people of the “great Gulf Coast.”

Unlike in New Orleans, where Carnival was marred by several deaths and injuries, Biloxi Police Chief John Miller said everyone stayed safe on the Coast and there were no injuries.

As a volunteer for the GCCA parade for 15 years, Susan Hunt said, “My favorite thing is the parade and the children saying ‘Throw me something.’ “
