D’Iberville renames block for business owner who has been in Old Town for 37 years
A well-known D’Iberville business leader now has a permanent designation along Central Avenue.
Claude Sykes Haney, who owned Haney’s Pawn Shop for over 37 years, accepted a proclamation with family by his side on Tuesday from the city.
Mayor Rusty Quave presented the honorary roadway sign denoting Sykes Haney Way.
City leaders decided to rename a block of Central Avenue from Rodriguez Street to Quave Road for the businessman’s dedication and contributions to the community.
For Haney, 76, the honor comes as a tribute to the investment he made nearly four decades ago.
He thanked the city for its commitment to revitalizing the Old Town District after Hurricane Katrina almost forced his business to close.
”It’s been a pleasure to come to work each morning because I know somebody or most people are going to say good morning, hello, or open the door for you,” said Haney.
“And, that’s the way we need D’Iberville to stay.”
Of note, Haney’s son, Cary, has taken helm as owner to keep their family business going strong.
The pawn shop and retail store — known for buying scrap gold, diamonds, and silver — accepts trades at 10115 Central Avenue each day except when closed on Sunday.
