Ten people, including a 5-year-old, were able escape Sunday when the 44-foot boat they were on in the Mississippi Sound caught fire, a Biloxi Fire Department official said.
The vessel, Rah Rah, was on the east end of Deer Island and about four miles from shore when a fire apparently started in the engine room about 3:50 p.m., Battalion Chief Anthony Trosclair said.
Rescuers in three boats picked up the 10 people before firefighters arrived, he said.
A small fire apparently caught some jugs of oil on fire in the engine room.
“One of the jugs was completely melted,” Trosclair said.
National Park Service rangers were patrolling the area by boat, he said, and were joined at the scene by a Coast Guard boat and a boat from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources.
It took firefighters 10 to 15 minutes to get the fire under control, Trosclair said.
The damaged boat was towed to shore.
