And people say there are no mermaids at sea.

The Coast Guard found out differently when they were notified Wednesday about an object in the Gulf of Mexico.

It turned out to be a floating dock with a mermaid painted on the structure adrift about 180 miles south of Grand Isle, Louisiana.

The Coast Guard sent an airplane crew out of Mobile to check for anyone aboard or signs of distress. The Coast Guard also notified other vessels in the area that the dock was adrift.

As a result of the request the Coast Guard put out, they were able to find the origin of the floating dock.

Key West, Florida, people.

The dock originally was located behind the Parrot Key Hotel in Key West. It was reported that it broke free from its mooring when Tropical Storm Emily blew through last week. There was no one aboard.

Note to Key Westers: A tropical wave is forming off the coast of West Africa, according to the National Hurricane Center. Better check those lashings.
