Bone marrow registry drive to benefit Gulfport teen

The Student Nurses Association of the University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Park campus will hold a bone marrow registry drive in Biloxi on Saturday to seek help for a Gulfport teen.

The "Be The Match" event will be from noon to 6 p.m. at Edgewater Mall, in the area near Books-A-Million and the carousel.

It will benefit Zayen Williams, a 13-year-old Gulfport boy who has severe aplastic anemia. The rare and serious condition occurs when a person's body stops producing enough new blood cells and leaves sufferers feeling fatigued and with a higher risk of infections and uncontrollable bleeding.

Anyone wanting to register will have their cheeks swabbed and fill out a form. Participants will be entered as possible donors and receive a donor card within a few weeks.
