Tomatoes sold in Mississippi recalled for threat of salmonella
Within a matter of hours, companies announced recalls due to two unrelated incidents of salmonella detection. One of the recalls affects Mississippi consumers.
Recalled tomatoes from Indiana distributors Ray & Mascari were sold as vine ripe tomatoes in four-count clam shell containers with a UPC number 7 96553 20062 1, and a master case label with lot number RM250424 15250B or lot number RM250427 15250B.
The tomatoes came from Hanshaw & Capling Farms in Florida. The produce was distributed by Gordon Food Service, which supplies restaurants, schools and hospitals in Mississippi, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Gordon also operates grocery stores, but none are in Mississippi.

The second recall came from Williams Farms Repack. The tomatoes were sold loose and prepackaged in baskets of varying sizes: 4x5 two layer, 60-count two layer and three-count trays.
Some of the recalled tomatoes have labels from H&C Farms: 5x6 25 lbs. and 6x6 25 lbs.
Salmonella could be deadly for children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. “Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain,” reported the FDA. No salmonella cases have been reported.
The Williams Farms tomatoes were distributed and sold between Wednesday, April 23, and Monday, April 28, in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
If you have any of the tomatoes, the FDA urges you to return them to the store for a full refund or throw them away. If you have already eaten tomatoes from the contaminated lot, monitor your symptoms and tell your doctor you may have ingested recalled tomatoes.
