Two more children die from COVID-19 in Mississippi, health department confirms

Two more pediatric COVID-19 deaths have been confirmed in Mississippi, the state’s Department of Health said Thursday in a tweet.

Both of the children were in the age range of 11 to 17 years old and were unvaccinated, the health department said.

Mississippi’s top health officials have pleaded with the public to get vaccinated, which is the most proven and effective way to prevent serious illness or death from the coronavirus.

Children ages 5 and older are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

The health department reported 586 new cases of the coronavirus on Thursday, with 18 deaths and 169 active outbreaks in long-term care facilities like nursing homes.

“Vaccination is the best protection for our children who are eligible to receive it,” State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers said in January after the tenth pediatric death was reported in the state.
