As Mississippi nears 10,000 deaths from COVID-19, the Sun Herald wants to track the gaps they left in Coast communities.
If you know someone who has died of the coronavirus, we want to hear from you.
On Tuesday, the state recorded 499,838 total cases and 9,957 total deaths. In the six South Mississippi counties, there have been 84,458 recorded cases and 1,422 cumulative deaths.
Recent counts of new cases and deaths position the state to soon hit the grave benchmark of 10,000 deaths.
The state health department originally predicted about 3,000 COVID deaths in Mississippi, State Medical Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said Oct. 8, based on a model they used for the flu.
The state surpassed the prediction about a year ago, in October 2020.
