Mississippi hits milestones for COVID-19, surpassing 100,000 cases and 3,000 deaths

Mississippi hit two COVID-19 milestones Saturday when total cases climbed to 100,167 and deaths to 3,015.

Sixteen new deaths reported put the state at more than 3,000, while 609 new cases means Mississippi has surpassed 100,000 cases. The state’s first COVID-19 case was reported March 11.

Cases for the six southernmost counties now total 10,567 and deaths stand at 249.

Only two additional deaths were reported: one in Geroge and one in Pearl River County.

Friday, Oct. 2

Cases of the coronavirus are on the rise in South Mississippi to the highest levels in almost a month.

On Friday the Mississippi Health Department reported 168 new cases in the six southern counties. The seven-day average rose to 77, the highest level since Sept. 4.

Across the state, there are 672 new cases and 20 additional deaths, with one of those deaths in Harrison County.

The seven-day average for the state is 504 new cases a day. It had fallen to 413 on Sept. 14, but has been on the rise since then.

The state likely will hit two big milestone numbers on Saturday. Total cases stand at 99,558 on Friday and at the current pace will exceed 100,000 Saturday. Deaths are at 2,999 in Mississippi Friday and likely will top 3,000 Saturday.

Hospital numbers continue to decrease or stay near the lowest levels in many weeks. Through Sept. 30, there were 431 hospitalized with COVID-19 in Mississippi, 100 in ICU and 68 on ventilators.

There are 89,737 presumed recoveries in the state through Sept. 27.

South Mississippi has 10,468 cases and 247 deaths since March 11. Harrison County has seen 76 deaths, Jackson County 70, Pearl River County 53, Hancock County 22 and George and Stone counties 13 each.

Thursday, Oct. 1

The Mississippi State Department of Health on Thursday reported 696 new cases of COVID-19, the highest number reported so far this week, and 10 deaths, bringing total cases to 98,886.

A total of 2,979 Mississippians have died during the pandemic since the first case was reported in the state March 11.

The lower six counties in South Mississippi reported 115 new cases, bringing total cases to 10,318. This is the highest number of cases reported since Aug. 26, when 127 cases were reported, and the only day in September when South Mississippi saw a triple-digit case number.

South Mississippi reported one new death, which was in Harrison County.

Wednesday, Sept. 30

Mississippi’s department of health reported 552 new cases of COVID-19 and 12 deaths on Wednesday, including one in Harrison County.

There were 66 total new cases reported in the state’s southernmost six counties with Jackson County leading the way with 32.

The seven-day average for new COVID-19 cases in South Mississippi was 57.43 as of Tuesday.

The seven-day average for the state is 516.71 with numbers taking a slight uptick over the last week. The average on Sept. 23 was 477.00.

As of Sept. 28, there were 464 Mississippians hospitalized with confirmed cases of the coronavirus. There were another 100 people hospitalized with suspected cases.

The number of patients in intensive care stood at 138.

Tuesday, Sept. 29

Mississippi reported 589 new COVID-19 cases and 36 new deaths on Tuesday.

One of the deaths took place in Stone County, bringing the county’s total number of coronavirus deaths to 13.

Since the pandemic began, 245 people in the six South Mississippi counties are reported to have died from COVID-19.

Seventy-seven of the state’s new cases were recorded in the bottom six counties. Harrison and Jackson Counties, the most populous counties in the region, continue to report the biggest case numbers, at 29 and 26 respectively on Tuesday.

Jackson and Harrison Counties remain in the state’s top 10 for number of cases, but they’re not among the hardest-hit counties for cases by population.

At the end of last week, the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 had fallen from above 510 to 477.

The number of patients on ventilators had fallen from 113 earlier in the month to 68.

Monday, Sept. 28

Mississippi reported 190 new COVID-19 cases and two new deaths Monday, continuing with a lower number of cases over the last two days.

There were 17 new cases and zero new deaths in the lower six counties.

Harrison and Jackson counties recorded the largest number of new local cases, with five and six, respectively.

Statewide, the health department reported 97,049 cases and 2,921 deaths.

Sunday, Sept. 27

Mississippi reported 182 new cases and 8 new deaths Sunday, bringing the totals to 96,859 cases and 2,919 deaths.

South Mississippi had 22 new cases and 0 new deaths on Sunday. The total now in the six southern counties is 10,043 cases and 244 deaths.

The state has 96,859 cases and 2,919 deaths.
