Two Coast counties report new COVID-19 deaths

Harrison and Jackson counties have each reported one more death from COVID-19, according to the latest numbers from the state health department.
On Saturday, the state reported 15 deaths and 445 new coronavirus cases. Forty-three new cases were reported in the state’s lower six counties, bringing the total to 9,315.
Since the pandemic began, 89,620 COVID-19 cases and 2,685 deaths had been reported, as of late Friday.
At a press conference Friday, Gov. Tate Reeves said he did not expect to let the statewide mask mandate expire on Monday.
“I think people having a mask on makes them more conscious and more aware of their surrounding and they tend to get much less close to people,” he said.
The White House Coronavirus Task Force said in its recent weekly report that Mississippi should be on alert for cases spreading from universities to surrounding communities.
“Mississippi has made progress and, to sustain the gains, should continue the strong mitigation efforts statewide and strengthen mitigation efforts in university towns to decrease spread from universities to the local community,” the report said.
A Mississippi Today count found that 896 students and faculty have tested positive at the state’s public colleges and universities since classes began.

Friday, Sept. 11
On Friday, Mississippi reported 15 deaths and 853 new coronavirus cases, the largest single-day increase in confirmed infections since Aug. 26.
As of 6 p.m. Sept. 10, a total of 89,175 COVID-19 cases and 2,670 deaths had been confirmed since the start of the pandemic.
The state’s seven-day average for newly reported COVID-19 cases rose slightly but still remains below 500. The average is roughly 462 cases per day, according to a Sun Herald analysis.
The state reported Friday that there were 133 long-term care facilities dealing with COVID-19 outbreaks.
Hospitalizations continue to trend mostly downward with 522 patients with confirmed COVID-19 infections, 177 in the ICU and 101 on ventilators as of Sept. 9.
South Mississippi reported 80 new cases, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 9,273.
Harrison reported two new deaths Friday. It was the only coastal county to report a death Friday, bringing the six-county region’s overall death toll to 226.
The seven-day average for the six southern counties is roughly 53 cases a day, around the same levels reported at the beginning of July.

Thursday, Sept. 9
On Thursday, Mississippi health officials confirmed 517 new coronavirus cases and 33 deaths statewide.
As of 6 p.m. Sept. 9, a total of 88,322 COVID-19 cases and 2,656 deaths had been confirmed since the start of the pandemic.
The state’s seven-day average for newly reported COVID-19 cases continues to fall. The average is now 458 cases per day, the lowest its been since mid-to-late June, according to a Sun Herald analysis.
The state reported Thursday that there were 146 long-term care facilities dealing with COVID-19 outbreaks as of Wednesday.
South Mississippi reported 48 new cases, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 9,193.
Stone and Jackson counties each reported one new death, bringing the Coast’s death total to 224.
The seven-day average for the six southern counties is roughly 54 cases a day, around the same levels reported at the beginning of July.

Wednesday, Sept. 9
On Wednesday, Mississippi’s seven-day average for new COVID-19 cases dipped below 500 for the first time since June 18 as the state continues to show improvement in its battle against the virus.
With 426 new cases, the seven-day average now stands at 491.43.
While the drop of the average is good news, there were 39 new deaths reported on Wednesday after the state reported none on Tuesday.
Seven of those deaths took place in the state’s southernmost six counties — four in Jackson County and three in Harrison County.
There have been 222 deaths from the coronavirus in South Mississippi this year.
The state reported Wednesday that there were 146 long-term care facilities dealing with COVID-19 outbreaks as of Tuesday.
The state reports that there has been 87,805 new cases of COVID-19 in the state with 2,623 deaths this year.

Tuesday, Sept. 8
On Tuesday, no new coronavirus-related deaths were reported in Mississippi for the first time since late March, according to a Sun Herald analysis of state coronavirus data. This excludes days when the state’s health department released no new data.
Delays in reporting coupled with the Labor Day weekend may have influenced Tuesday’s data. Statewide, 249 new cases were reported. As of 6 p.m. on Sept. 7, a total of 87,379 COVID-19 cases and 2,585 deaths have been confirmed.
South Mississippi reported 48 new cases, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 9,092.
The seven-day average for the six southern counties is roughly 63 cases a day, around the same levels reported before the July 4 holiday.

Monday, Sept. 7
Monday’s coronavirus numbers in South Mississippi are what people have waited months to see — down to 242 cases statewide and 1 death across the state.
That brings the total to 87,130 with 2,585 deaths. There are 67,918 presumed recoveries through Aug. 30.
South Mississippi had 45 new cases and 0 new deaths reported Monday. That puts the total cases to 9,044 in the nearly six months since the first case was reported on March 11.
The seven-day average for the six southern counties is 70 a day, about the same level as it was on July 4, before the cases and deaths increased dramatically for weeks following the holiday.

Sunday, Sept. 6
The 410 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Mississippi Sunday dropped the seven-day average to 602 cases a day, the lowest it’s been since mid-June and half of what it was on Aug. 1.
The state health department reported 16 additional deaths, with 1 in Harrison and 1 from the investigation of a prior death certificate in Pearl River County.
There now are 215 total deaths in South Mississippi: 63 in Harrison County, 60 in Jackson County, 49 in Pearl River County, 20 in Hancock County, 13 in George County and 10 in Stone County.
Mississippi has 86,888 in the nearly six months since March 11, and 2,584 deaths.
Hospitalizations continue to remain lower than they were in August, with 608 patients with COVID-19 hospitalized, 186 in ICU and 111 on ventilators.

Over the past week — from Aug. 31 through Sept. 6 — there were 6 additional deaths in Harrison County, 1 in Pearl River County and none in the other four counties in South Mississippi. Harrison had 190 new cases over the past week, Jackson 153, Pearl River 39, Hancock 20 and Stone 19.
