South Mississippi hits 200 deaths from the coronavirus

South Mississippi reached 200 deaths from the coronavirus on Saturday, more than five months after the coronavirus pandemic began.

After two days with no new deaths in South Mississippi, one was reported for Stone County.

The state had 14 deaths and 735 new cases Saturday.

Totals cases now are 82,029 for the state since March 11, with 2,427 deaths.

Gov. Tate Reeves, in Gulport Saturday for the opening of the Mississippi Aquarium in Gulport and the 15th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, said he is contemplating whether to extend his mask order. The executive order requiring masks in public runs through Monday, Aug. 31.

Reeves said that the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 is down again in late August as is the number on ventilators and in ICU.

Saturday’s report showed 674 hospitalized with confirmed cases, 215 in ICU and 111 on ventilators, all among the lowest levels this month.

South Mississippi had 108 new cases Saturday after the numbers had dropped for two days. Total cases in the six southern counties is 8,433.

George — 679 (5 new)

Hancock — 487 (7 new)

Harrison — 3,268 (68 new)

Jackson — 2,946 (14 new)

Pearl River — 743 (10 new)

Stone — 310 (4 new)
