Mississippi’s COVID-19 numbers tick up after dropping for 3 days
After three days of consecutive declines in new coronavirus cases in the state and across South Mississippi, the numbers ticked back up Tuesday.
In Mississippi, 795 new cases were reported by the health department, up from 276 on Monday and 381 Sunday. Only one day in the last 10 saw more than 1,000 new cases reported per day.
Fewer than 100 new cases were reported six out of the last 10 days in South Mississippi. Tuesday there were 78 new cases in South Mississippi, up from 57 Monday and 61 Sunday.
Another 34 deaths were reported statewide Tuesday, 1 in Jackson County. Three more deaths were added on the Coast after review of prior death certificates, 2 in Harrison County and 1 in Hancock County.
The 163 total deaths from the pandemic are 48 in Jackson County, 42 in Pearl River, 40 in Harrison, 17 in Hancock, 10 in George and 6 in Stone.
“There have been some last battles, unfortunately,” said Lee Bond, CEO of Singing River Health System. “But we also must recognize that 90% of the 23,509 people who have been tested (through Aug. 14) were negative, and more importantly that of the 2,500 people who were positive, over 98% of them have recovered thanks to life-saving care right here with us.”
Hospital numbers are decreasing in Mississippi in the last week. From Aug. 11-17, patients hospitalized with the coronavirus dropped from 972 to 929, COVID-19 patients in ICU fell from 323 to 284 and those on ventilators is down from 195 to 163.
Total cases for Mississippi now stands at 73,207 with 2,128 deaths.
Presumed recoveries statewide rose to 56,577 through Aug. 16, up from 49,836 a week ago on Aug. 9.
Cases at Ingalls Shipbuilding, which had been decreasing over the past week, increased Tuesday 16. The Pascagoula shipyard had 5 new cases Monday and 6 on Sunday.
South Mississippi has 7,304 total cases since March 11. By county totals are:
George — 641 (2 new)
Hancock — 432 (0 new)
Harrison — 2,836 (32 new)
Jackson — 2,518 (36 new)
Pearl River — 618 (5 new)
Stone — 259 (3 new)
