MS reports fewest new COVID-19 cases in 6 weeks. But 4 more people died on the Coast.
Mississippi’s state health department on Monday announced its smallest single-day total for new COVID-19 cases since July 5, but it did prove to be a costly day in terms of death in South Mississippi.
The state announced 276 new cases of the coronavirus and 11 more deaths, including four in the state’s southernmost six counties.
George, Hancock, Harrison and Pearl River counties each reported a single death, bringing the total for South Mississippi this year to 159 — 83 of which were since July 4.
Monday’s new cases marked the first time the health department has announced fewer than 300 since there were 226 on July 5.
After the seven-day average for new cases in Mississippi reached a peak of 1,380.86 on July 26, that stat has now been cut in half. The average stood at 680.43 on Monday.
There were 57 new cases announced for South Mississippi on Monday, bringing the seven-day average for the area to 95..
The health department hasn’t announced new hospitalization numbers since Aug. 14, when there were 963 people hospitalized with confirmed cases of COVID-19. There were also 321 patients in intensive care.
