COVID-19 deaths top 2,000 in state as 4 more reported in South Mississippi

The number of deaths from the coronavirus in Mississippi topped 2,000 Thursday as 4 more deaths were reported in South Mississippi.

Jackson County had 2 new deaths and George and Stone County each had 1 new death, pushing the total deaths in South Mississippi to 153, or 7.6 percent of the 2,011 deaths in the state. The six Coast counties have 16% of the population in Mississippi.

With schools and prison systems announcing additional coronavirus cases, the number of new cases statewide was 612 with 22 deaths.

South Mississippi had 44 of those new cases, the lowest in the six lower counties since July 13.

Hospitalizations remain high across the state, but below the record highs. Reported statewide Wednesday were 972 patients hospitalized with coronavirus, down from the high of 989 on July 30. There were 323 people in intensive care units, below the high of 337 on Aug. 5, and 195 on ventilators, down from the high of 198 on Aug. 7.

Presumed recoveries statewide are 49,836 as of Aug. 9.

There were 10 new cases at Ingalls Shipbuilding on Wednesday and 11 on Thursday. At times in early August, there were more 30 cases reported in a day.

Stennis Space Center has 12 active cases.

  • George — 605 (2 new)
  • Hancock —414 (5 new)
  • Harrison — 2,663 (12 new)
  • Jackson — 2,411 (20 new)
  • Pearl River — 571 (4 new)
  • Stone — 225 (1 new)
