Ocean Springs kindergarten class in quarantine after teacher tests positive for COVID
A kindergarten class at Pecan Park Elementary has been asked to quarantine at home for 14 days after the teacher tested positive for COVID-19, Ocean Springs School District Superintendent Bonita Coleman confirmed to the Sun Herald on Tuesday.
Coleman said the students will be learning from home until their anticipated return to class on Aug. 24.
“It’s a very small kindergarten class,” Coleman said. “We have K-8 students, and they were only with their particular group. They did not go to recess with other students.”
Coleman said the teacher was informed after class on Friday that she may have been exposed to the coronavirus.
“On Sunday, she received the results and called us,” Coleman said. “We went into action. The parents were reached by phone call and we sent a follow-up letter as well.”
Coleman said that the district will continue to check on those students.
“It’s difficult for all districts, but we’ll err on the side of safety,” she said. “We’ve been checking on (the students) and none of them have had symptoms. We really want to make sure we follow all CDC and (state health department) protocols.
“As we continue to have school traditionally, we’re going to have individuals who come to schools and not know they have it. We’ll continue to do all our safety checks.”
