Mississippi’s COVID deaths climbing with 33 added, but MSDH shows new cases declining

The daily COVID-19 totals from Mississippi’s state health department again showed a leveling off in the number of new cases on Tuesday, but the death toll continues to climb in the Magnolia State.

The state health department announced 644 new cases and 33 deaths, including three in the state’s southernmost six counties.

The counties of Jackson, Pearl River and George each reported a single death. Jackson County continues to lead South Mississippi in COVID-19 deaths with 44.

Of those 44 deaths, seven have taken place in long-term care facilities.

The state’s seven-day average for new cases dipped below 900 (870.57) for the first time since July 17.

Harrison County led South Mississippi with 71 newly reported cases on Tuesday, bringing its annual total to 2,601. The health department announced 121 new cases in South Mississippi.

The state did not immediately update its hospitalization numbers on Tuesday. As of Aug. 9, there were 932 people hospitalized with confirmed cases and another 142 with suspected cases. There were also 328 patients in intensive care and 196 on ventilators.

The state has announced 68,293 cases of COVID-19 and 1,944 deaths.

As of Aug. 9, there were 49,836 Mississippians who were presumed to have recovered from COVID-19.
