Coronavirus cases top 1,000 again in Mississippi, but Coast numbers drop below 100

It’s been 150 days since the first case of coronavirus was reported in Mississippi, and the number of new cases topped 1,000 again after being below that mark three days this week.

There were 23 additional deaths Friday, including 1 in Stone County. One fewer death was reported for Jackson County, keeping total deaths in South Mississippi at 135.

Jackson County has the most deaths in South Mississippi at 42, followed by Pearl River with 37, Harrison with 35, Hancock with 14 and George and Stone counties with 4 each.

With 1,036 new cases Friday, Mississippi now has 65,436 cases since March 11. Of the 1,848 deaths, 810 were residents of long term care facilities.

South Mississippi has 6,268 total cases, an increase of 95 for the day.

The number of people hospitalized with the coronavirus is 943, the lowest it’s been since July 25. A record 335 people are in intensive care with COVID-19 and those on ventilators dropped to 191, down only two from the previous day.

Total cases by county are:

George — 549 (1 new)

Hancock — 373 (10 new)

Harrison — 2,406 (28 new)

Jackson — 2,225 (24 new)

Pearl River — 529 (9 new)

Stone — 186 (23 new)
