Mississippi announces another large COVID-19 death toll, including 6 on the Coast

Following two days when COVID-19 deaths dipped to 10 or fewer in Mississippi, the state health department announced a single-day death toll of 42 on Tuesday.

Six of those deaths took place in South Mississippi, including four in Jackson County. The total death toll in Jackson County stands at 38 — an increase of 22 in the last month.

Harrison and Pearl River counties each reported one COVID-19 death on Tuesday.

The state announced 1,074 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, bringing the seven-day average to 1,128.7.

After the state announced a record total of 1,755 new cases on July 30, single-day totals have fallen well short of that mark ever since, but the trend is still upward. The seven-day average reached a high of 1,380.86 on July 26.

Harrison County led the Coast in new cases on Tuesday with 76. Jackson County wasn’t far behind with 69.

Hospitalizations in Mississippi have stabilized somewhat but remain high with 963 patients in the hospital with confirmed COVID-19 cases. There were another 201 people hospitalized with suspected cases of the coronavirus.

COVID-19 patients in intensive care reached a new high in Tuesday’s numbers at 314.

The number of patients on ventilators stood at 173 on Monday after reaching a high mark of 192 on Saturday.

There have been 62,199 reported cases of COVID-19 and 1,753 deaths in Mississippi.

Hancock — 344 (8 new)

Harrison — 2228 (76 new)

Jackson — 2063 (69 new)

Pearl River — 496 (11 new)

Stone — 159 (7 new)
