George County’s coronavirus cases double in two days as MS reports 1,775 new cases

The number of new cases in George County has doubled in just two days, overtaking Pearl River County in total number of cases since March.

The seven-day average of new cases in South Mississippi hit a record 184 per day on Thursday.

Two more deaths were reported in Harrison County, and 4 more people died from COVID-19 in Jackson County, according to the daily report from the state health department.

South Mississippi has a total of 5,229 cases. Of those, 256 cases and 40 deaths were in long term care facilities in South Mississippi.

George County had 256 total cases on Tuesday, and by Thursday the total was 517, an increase of 261 cases in two days. Many of those new cases came from George County Regional Correctional Facility in Lucedale, where 228 inmates and staff members tested positive.

Mississippi has a record 982 people in the hospital being treated for coronavirus, topping the previous record of 975 set on Saturday. The 178 patients statewide on ventilators also sets a record.

There were 1,775 new cases and 48 additional deaths reported statewide Thursday. Since March 11, there have been 57,579 cases of the coronavirus and 1,611 deaths. Nursing home residents account for 721 of the deaths.

Hancock — 310 (12 new)

Harrison — 1,982 (38 new)

Jackson — 1,820 (48 new)

Pearl River — 462 (10 new)

Stone — 138 (4 new)
