Mobile delays back-to-school start as COVID spreads. First 9 weeks will be online only.
Mobile County Public Schools announced Thursday that the district will delay the start of school until Sept. 1 and that classes will be online only for at least the first nine weeks.
Classes were originally set to begin on Aug. 10, but the surging cases of COVID-19 in Alabama prompted superintendent Chresal Threadgill to push back the calendar for the 2020-21 school year.
Once the first nine weeks are complete, Threadgill plans to re-evaluate the situation.
MCPS has ordered laptops and WiFi units to help students who will be working from home with CARES Act funding helping to pay a large chunk of the cost, according to WKRG.com.
Most school districts on the Mississippi Gulf Coast have announced plans for the first semester with hope of students entering classrooms in August.
Classes are set to begin on Aug. 6 in the Harrison County School District with students required to attend on-campus classes daily.
