Harrison County cases continue to climb fastest in South Mississippi

The number of new cases in Mississippi slowed a bit today, with 465 cases and 13 deaths.

It was the first day this week the Mississippi Department of Health reported fewer than 500 cases.

The Health Department reports 527 people are hospitalized with coronavirus and an additional 204 with suspected COVID-19.

Totals for the state now stand at 25,531 cases and 1,035 deaths since March 11, with 17,242 recoveries through June 21.

Harrison County continues to outpace the other counties in South Mississippi, with 27 more cases in today’s report.

Jackson and Harrison counties each had 367 total cases on June 15. In the less than two weeks since then, Harrison County has added 267 cases while Jackson County added 106 cases.

With an additional 37 cases reported for South Mississippi today, the total now stands at 1,574 cases. The death total remains at 72 for the sixth day.

George — 66 (5 new)

Hancock — 116 (1 new)

Harrison — 634 (27 new)

Jackson — 473 (2 new)

Pearl River — 236 (1 new)

Stone — 49 (1 new)

Gov. Tate Reeves on Friday signed a new executive order extending the social distancing guidelines and restrictions under the Safe Return order until 8 a.m. on Monday, July 6.

“The threat is far from over,” he said. “Extending our Safe Return order will give us much-needed time to assess this rapidly-changing situation and adapt our response to slow the spread.”

Reeves also signed an executive order extending unemployment benefits, waiving the one-week waiting period and the work search requirements, until the end of July

Ingalls Shipbuilding in Jackson County last reported no new cases on Sunday, June 21. Monday through Saturday the Pascagoula shipyard had 17 employees test positive for coronavirus. Total cases are now 74, with 45 of those employees eligible to return to work.
