Mississippi Coast coronavirus cases are now rising fastest in Harrison County

With 12 of the 14 new cases reported Wednesday, Harrison County continues to see the biggest increases in new coronavirus cases in South Mississippi.

Jackson and Hancock counties each have 1 new case and there are 0 new deaths reported in the lower six counties.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reports Wednesday 374 cases and 21 more deaths, with 4 of those deaths identified from death certificate reports between May 26 and June 1.

The report says 434 people are hospitalized with coronavirus statewide and 99 patients are on ventilators.

There are 13,356 presumed recoveries through June 7.

Totals in Mississippi since March 11 are 18,483 cases and 868 deaths.

The 7-day average for new cases has risen to 309 per day. The average of 328 new cases on June 1, dropped to 253 on June 7 and has climbed for the last three days.

Harrison County has added 50 cases since June 1, compared to 32 new cases in Jackson County and 3 new cases in Hancock County since June 1.

Total cases by county are:

George — 32 (0 new for two days)

Hancock — 94 (1 new)

Harrison — 311 (12 new)

Jackson — 339 (1 new)

Pearl River — 221 (0 new for two days)

Stone — 33 (0 new for two days)

Tuesday’s highlights:

Reported COVID-19 cases in Mississippi’s southernmost six counties cleared the 1,000 mark on Tuesday.

Twenty five new cases were reported in South Mississippi, bringing the region’s total to 1,016.

The 25 cases is the biggest single-day increase for the area since the same number was announced on May 14.

Harrison County reported 11 new cases and Jackson County added 9.

There were no new deaths reported in South Mississippi.
