Live updates June 1: New COVID-19 cases in Harrison County, no Coast deaths for 5 days

The Mississippi Department of Health reported 251 new coronavirus cases, the fewest since May 25.

Monday’s report showed 5 new deaths, the least since May 11.

The report also showed 418 people are hospitalized for the coronavirus, down from 449 on May 29.

South Mississippi had 3 new cases, all of them in Harrison County. There were 0 deaths reported, the fifth straight day without an additional death from coronavirus.

Health experts are watching to see if businesses reopening and gatherings for Memorial Day and graduation will lead to more cases of coronavirus.

The state now has 15,752 cases and 739 deaths since March 11.

South Mississippi has 923 cases and 63 deaths.

Total cases for South Mississippi are:

George — 25 (0 new cases for three days)

Hancock — 91 (0 new cases for two days)

Harrison — 261 (3 new cases)

Jackson — 307 (1 fewer cases)

Pearl River — 209 (0 new cases for three days)

Stone — 30 (0 new cases for eight days)

There now are 11,203 presumed recoveries in Mississippi.

Statistics from the daily report show that through May 31, 60% of those that tested positive for coronavirus in Mississippi are black, 30% are white, 7% are Hispanic and 3% are American Indian, Asian or other.

The report shows 59% of the cases are women and 41% men.

More black men (197) than black women (181) have died from coronavirus.

More white women (177) than white men (145) have died from coronavirus.

The “hot spots” for new cases last week were Jones County with 86 new cases, Hinds County with 82 new cases and Neshoba with 65 new cases.

1:45 p.m.

Pascagoula Fire Department received 12,000 KN95 masks to distribute to the public and after the first distribution Monday, several thousand masks remain.

The will be given away to the public Tuesday beginning at 9 a.m. Firefighers will distribute the masks at Pascagoula Senior Center, 1912 Live Oak Ave. Those coming for masks should enter from Carver Street and stay in their cars. There will be a five mask limit per car.

8 a.m.

Ingalls Shipbuilding reports just 1 new case of coronavirus in the last week at the Pascagoula shipyard. Total cases are 41, with 33 employees now eligible to return to work.

Weekend highlights:

The Department of Health reported 439 new cases and 13 new deaths Saturday, topping Friday’s 418 new cases. There were 272 new cases and 11 new deaths statewide on Sunday.

The state now has a total of 15,501 cases and 734 deaths because of the virus.

South Mississippi had 18 new cases on Saturday and 5 on Sunday.

The Sun Herald is tracking the seven-day average, which gives a better idea of the overall curve since there are daily highs and lows when private labs submit batches of data. The average surpassed 300 cases late last week, and is now at its highest of 321.

The Coast’s seven-day average has been ticking back up after dipping below 5 last week. It rose back above 8 last week and is now at 7.86.
