Pick up bread, toilet paper, more from this Coast business. But it’s not a grocery store.
While some grocery shelves are quickly emptied after being re-stocked during the new coronavirus pandemic, restaurant wholesalers have the opposite problem.
Shelves are full of food, and restaurants are not ordering.
Just over a week ago, Coast cities and counties ordered restaurant dining rooms closed to prevent spread of the virus, and statewide no more than 10 people can be in a restaurant at once. Delivery and take-out orders aren’t enough for many businesses to keep the doors open, and some have closed temporarily.
As demand from restaurants has fallen off, one local supplier, Coast Foods, has opened up its warehouse to individual sales at wholesale prices.
President Mark McQueen said he saw an opportunity to help his community.
“We were able to figure out a solution to our problem and help the public at the same time.”
Coast Foods normally supplies restaurants like Half Shell Oyster House.
The list of foods for sale include breads, ground meat and lunch meat, seafood like Royal Reds and fish filets, pantry staples and some paper products. The latest list of products is on the Coast Foods Facebook page, www.facebook.com/coastfoodsadmin.
People can order by email and pick up the food the next day. Customers can sit in their car and their orders will be loaded for them.
McQueen said one day last week there were over 400 customers.
“This is not a one time solution,” McQueen said, “We have trucks coming in every day and we will continuing helping out until this is over.”
