VIP placed $1 million in bets on Super Bowl LIX at MS Coast casino. Here’s how he did
A frequent bettor at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino placed a $1 million in bets on Super Bowl LIX.
It is believed to be the largest legal bet placed on the game, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal.
The man made the bet about two hours before the 6:30 p.m. kickoff at the Caesars Superdome, about a two hour drive away.
“He actually played the bet on his way to New Orleans to watch the game,” said Carl Johnson, the Bet MGM Sportsbook director at the Beau Rivage Casino in Biloxi. The man is a VIP player at the Beau Rivage, he said, and got free tickets to the game.
How much did he win on his million dollar bet?
He wagered $500,000 on a straight bet for the Eagles to win the game, and when Philadelphia beat the Chiefs by a score of 40-22, he won $500,000 to double his money.
His next two bets in the three-way wager didn’t pay off.
“So the way it worked out for him is he ended up breaking even for the day,” Johnson said.
How it played out
He bet $300,000 on the over/under for the game. That number was 48.5 total points scored. He bet “under,” and since the total points were 62, he lost that bet and his $300,000.
“And then he played what we call a teaser, where you can move the line six points in your favor,” Johnson said. “He actually got a $200,000 teaser on Philadelphia, plus 7.5 and under 54.5.” The Chiefs’ late touchdown made the total score go over that number, Johnson said, and it cost him that bet.
“So he actually won his first bet for $500,000 and he lost his other $500,000,” Johnson said. But he got free tickets to the game.
Lots of other big bets wagered
“Not only did we take those large wagers from that individual, but we had another guy that bet a quarter of a million dollars on the over/under, and he lost that bet.” he said. “We had several people that bet anywhere from $75,000 to $100,000 on Philadelphia that won their bet.”
Once the NFC and AFC championship games decided the Eagles and Chiefs would meet in the the Super Bowl, the trend was for all of the bigger action betters coming in on Philadelphia, Johnson said.
The rest of the public who are occasional bettors were all on Kansas City, he said.
“The way it worked out for us, we ended up having a really good day,” he said. Although the big bettors won along with Philadelphia, the sportsbook had enough money from the public bet on Kansas city that it outweighed the larger bets, he said.
About 30 percent of the people in the room were happy when Philadelphia won, he said.
Big day at the casino
The Beau Rivage drew a crowd of people who wanted to see the game but couldn’t get tickets or didn’t want to spend the money to go to New Orleans.
Fans watched on screens throughout the casino and in several venues. The sports book had about 300 people and was filled to capacity, Anderson said. The ballroom, where they had their VIP party, had another 800 in there. The theater had 600 more, and other celebrations were underway at the 875 lounge and at MGM Golf and Lux Lounge.
“It was an amazing event. It is every year, and it gets bigger and bigger every year,” Johnson said.
While fans didn’t agree on which team should win, he said, they cheered together when President Trump appeared on the TV screen and booed loudly when Taylor Swift was shown.
“I mean, that was the loudest the crowd got the whole game,” he said.
