Opening delayed for $10.5 million South Mississippi water park. Here’s why.
The Hattiesburg Convention Commission is delaying the opening of Serengeti Springs at the Hattiesburg Zoo to Spring 2024, according to a press release.
The $10.5 million water park expansion, first announced last August, was originally planned to open to the public in September of this year.
Construction delays and the seasonal timeline led to the commission’s decision to delay the opening.
“While there was still a chance that Serengeti Springs could open in September of this year, that would give very little time for guests to enjoy the Water Park to its fullest and so we have made the decision to hold the opening to the Spring of 2024,” Rick Taylor, executive director for the commission, said in a press release. “We are disappointed that we cannot open this summer, but realize it was a lofty goal to finish a project of this scale within 12 months.”
Construction managers say the park site was experiencing 9-10 days of rain each month, according to the release, and has been dealing with supply chain issues.
A hard opening date has not been announced yet, but the commission says the majority of construction has been on schedule.
Season passes for the park will officially go on sale on Nov. 24 at $60 each.
