An Abita Springs day care center had its license revoked Tuesday after a group of toddlers was found wandering in a busy street outside the facility and a subsequent inspection revealed further problems, state officials said.

A passing driver spotted the four toddlers April 7. They were roaming along Main Street in Abita Springs outside the Abita Church Christian Daycare, according to a news release from the Louisiana Department of Education.

The children, ages 1 and 2, were able to get out of the center’s playground through an opening in the picket fence surrounding the property. Managers at the day care center did not report the incident to the Department of Education, the news release said.

Child welfare authorities did report it, however, and inspectors showed up April 11. They cited the center’s managers for not reporting the incident, not supervising the children the day they got out and not having proper fencing around the playground.
