Steele, who now lives in Brooklyn, is the daughter of Bobby and Kande Steele of Biloxi and a 1993 graduate of Biloxi High School. She went to New York in 1996 and got a role in the Broadway hit production of "Rent," followed by appearing in the revival of "Jesus Christ Superstar."
In 2002, she and now-husband David Cook began writing music. Two years later, her debut EP was released. She has since worked with or shared the stage with Moby, Ledisi, George Clinton and Snarky Puppy. Her first full-length album, "I'll Be Anything," was released in 2009; "Rise" is her most recent album.
The R&B/jazz performer has listed Big Mama Thornton, Lizz Wright, Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson and Aretha Franklin as influences.
The full band lineup for this performance will be announced soon, according to the Mary C.
The Mary C. is at 1600 Government St., Ocean Springs.
