Mississippi oyster season closes again

BILOXI -- Two oyster harvest areas that opened temporarily Wednesday are closed until further notice, according to the state Department of Marine Resources.

The reefs were closed at 4 p.m. Wednesday following poor test results from water samples, DMR spokeswoman Melissa Scallan said.

Wednesday morning, the DMR conditionally opened Area II E and Area II F in an effort to provide some relief to Mississippi's distressed commercial oyster season, which has already seen several long closures and below-average harvests when the waters do open. Both those areas, along with the rest of Mississippi's oyster reefs, will remain closed until further notice.
