SLIDELL -- A Gautier man died in a two-car accident Friday on Interstate 10 near the Louisiana line.

Louisiana State Police identified the victim as Jimmy Arroyo Ferrer, 34, LSP spokesman TFC Dustin Dwight said in a press release.

The vehicles crashed shortly after 9:30 a.m. The on-scene investigation revealed Ferrer was driving a 2004 Mercedes-Benz in the left westbound lane when he ran off the road into the median. His car began to spin as it skidded through the median toward the eastbound travel lanes. It hit a 2014 Jeep driven by Jessica Sheffield, 22, of Auburndale, Fla. Sheffield tried to avoid being hit by swerving to the right, but was unsuccessful.

The front of the Jeep hit the driver's side of the Mercedes, fatally injuring Ferrer. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office.

Sheffield suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Oschner Medical Center Northshore.

Troopers took blood samples from both drivers and sent them to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis, though impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash, Dwight said.
