Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers responded to two fatal accidents in South Mississippi on Thursday.

The first was at 3:21 p.m. in Pearl River County. A Kia Sedona driven by Jayson Lee Woodfill, 22, of Waveland, was northbound on Mississippi 53 near Melton Smith Road when a Toyota Camry driven by Diane Fawcus Beith, 72, of Carriere, crossed the center line.

MHP spokesman Cpl. B.J. Seibert said the Camry ran head-on into the Sedona, killing Beith and injuring Woodfill.

The second wreck was shortly thereafter, about 3:30 p.m., in George County. A Nissan Maxima driven by Tyjuan Fairley, 17, of Lucedale, was westbound on Mississippi 26 near Randys Road when it ran off the road and hit an embankment, then a utility pole.

Both the driver and the passenger, Darius Fairley, 27, also of Lucedale, were ejected from the vehicle. The driver died at the scene, and the passenger was airlifted to University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile with life-threatening injuries.

Seibert said neither the driver nor the passenger of the Maxima had on seat belts.

Both accidents remain under investigation.
