Coast Guardsmen rescue I-10 driver seconds before truck bursts into flames
MOBILE, Ala. -- Four U.S. Coast Guardsmen rescued a driver trapped in his overturned 18-wheeler just seconds before the truck's cab became engulfed in flames near an Interstate 10 off-ramp Thursday.
The four marine inspectors from Coast Guard Sector Mobile, which covers parts of Mississippi, witnessed the accident near the Tillman's Corner exit of I-10 and quickly responded, pulling the unconscious driver from the semi-truck cab as it was on fire, Coast Guard spokesman Jonathan Lally said.
Tally said the truck's cab burst into flames just seconds after the guardsmen carried the driver to a safe distance.
The Coast Guardsmen called 911 and rendered first aid to the man until EMT units arrived on-scene and took the driver to an area hospital in Mobile for treatment to unknown injuries.
Authorities have not yet identified the driver or the guardsmen who saved his life.
