Obama to return to Louisiana on Friday; shears cut successful (Updated 9:40 a.m.)

President Barack Obama will return to Louisiana on Friday to assess the latest efforts to counter the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the White House said today. Out in the Gulf, the cut to the pipe is successful, the Coast Guard says.

The cut is irregular, Adm. Thad Allen said, and placing the cap over the well will be more difficult as a result. Allen said the cap was over the gusher and expected it to be lowered in the next couple of hours.

This is BP's latest attemp to stop the leak that has been spewing oil into the Gulf of Mexico since the Deepwater Horizon exploded on April 20. will update this story when more details are available later today.
