TUPELO – A 15-year-old male, who was out on bond for shooting someone, is being held without bond after being charged as an adult with a felonious assault at a west Tupelo park in mid-June.
Police responded to the emergency room at North Mississippi Medical Center on South Gloster Street June 15 to take a report on someone who had been assaulted. The victim told police that while at Ballard Park, they saw a friend being assaulted by a group of individuals. When the victim attempted to intervene, one of the suspects struck him in the face with a firearm.
The investigation led to the June 24 arrest of Jamarian Donelson, 15, of Ida Street, Tupelo, charged with one count of aggravated assault. Since Donelson had previously been certified to be prosecuted as an adult, he was booked into the Lee County Adult Jail around 7:30 the same evening.
During his initial appearance, Tupelo Municipal Court Judge Jay Weir ordered Donelson to be held without bond.
At the time of his arrest, Donelson was out on bond for a previous aggravated assault following a February shooting that sent another juvenile to the emergency room.
A Friday, Feb. 13, party at a residence in the Lee Acres subdivision in Tupelo was punctuated with an altercation that escalated to gunfire. The juvenile victim was driven to the emergency room with life-threatening injuries. They have since been released from the hospital.
Witnesses told police the shooting happened at a residence on Filmore Drive. Officers and detectives then went to the address to begin the investigation.
Donelson, who at that time listed his address as Fernwood Drive, Baldwyn, was arrested 13 days later and charged as an adult with one count of aggravated assault. Lee County Circuit Court Judge John White ordered Donelson to be held on a $50,000 bond.
He remained incarcerated at the county jail for just more than two months. Jail records show he bonded out on April 26 at 2:45 p.m.
At some point, evidence of both aggravated assaults will be presented to a Lee County grand jury for possible indictments.
