Biloxi tops the just-released list of "Eight Affordable Gulf Coast Beaches with Serious Summer Sizzle."
At $1,085, Biloxi has the lowest average weekly rate of the eight cities ranked by TripAdvisor on its vacation rentals blog. The blog says Biloxi is known for its small-town charm and Southern hospitality.
"It has the soft, white sand and scenic views you'll find at some of the Coast's more familiar beaches -- just without the noisy crowds and shortage of parking spots," the blog says.
The website suggests visitors take advantage of the amazing sunrises, tide pools and a morning tour of the Biloxi Lighthouse.
One TripAdvisor reviewer recommended a tour to Ship Island.
"I grew up in Florida, but this is one of the most pristine beaches you will ever find," the reviewer writes. "On the ride out to the island, we saw porpoises swimming alongside the boat. The whole experience was just wonderful."
The other seven cities to make the list and the average weekly rate:
2. Corpus Christi, Texas, $1,217
3. Rockport, Texas, $1,327
4. Gulf Shores, Ala., $1,395
5. South Padre Island, Texas, $1,436
6. Fort Morgan, Ala., $1,444
7. Galveston Island, Texas, $1,458
8. Orange Beach, Ala., $1,499
The TripAdvisor blog echoes what tourism officials in South Mississippi are saying -- that lesser-known beaches in Mississippi, Alabama and Texas have the same white sand, gentle surf and warm water as on the Florida Panhandle but with smaller crowds and more affordable locations.
