MSC Cruises launches remote check-in to skip embarkation lines
If you've ever stood in a slow-moving check-in line at the cruise terminal hungry for your first lunch on the Lido deck, you know how much a smooth check-in process is worth.
As someone who has experienced the difference that breezing through check-in with minimal lines can have on starting your vacation on the right foot, I'm eager to see more cruise lines test ways to speed up this process beyond using staggered boarding times. Even if you arrive at the cruise terminal at your assigned check-in time, you can still expect to wait in line for travel document verification and security screening before your vacation can really begin.
But for some cruisers, those wait times in the terminal stand to become shorter thanks to a new Digital Remote Check-In service MSC Cruises is rolling out at select embarkation ports. The cruise line debuted the new service in Seattle this summer during MSC Poesia's inaugural Alaska cruise season, and it's the kind of operational enhancement that promises to make a real difference on embarkation day.

How MSC Cruises' Digital Remote Check-In works
MSC's remote check-in concept is simple: complete your cruise check-in and travel document verification at the airport, then skip straight to security screening and boarding at the port.
The catch is you have to book an MSC Cruises' official airport transfer to take advantage of the new service - at least for now.

For Alaska cruises, the service allows passengers traveling on MSC airport transfers to complete their cruise check-in at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport prior to arriving at the cruise terminal. Once they arrive at the cruise terminal, they get to skip the line for traditional document verification and check-in steps and proceed directly to security screening and boarding.
In Seattle, the service complements Port Valet, a free disembarkation day luggage transfer service to the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport available to cruise passengers sailing with most cruise lines. Port Valet lets passengers explore Seattle luggage-free before heading to the airport and then skip airport check-in lines to go directly to airport security once they arrive for their flight.
MSC Cruises to expand Digital Remote Check-In as part of bigger tech push
After rolling out its new Digital Remote Check-In service in Seattle, MSC plans to soon introduce it at more cruise departure ports across the globe. As the cruise line expands the service, it also plans to extend it to general airport arrivals, hotels, and select other pre-cruise locations. It's worth watching if you're planning an MSC sailing later this year or in 2027.
Digital Remote Check-in is part of a broader push at MSC to use smart technology to elevate every stage of the passenger journey, from arrival through embarkation and beyond.

This isn't MSC's first move to smooth out friction points with digital tools. The line recently rolled out MSC Concierge, an AI-powered chat assistant built into the MSC For Me app. It helps passengers avoid waits at the guest services desk on board with instant assistance and answers to their cruise questions available in more than 90 languages. During its pilot, MSC Concierge posted a 93% satisfaction score across more than 170,000 guests - a strong signal that cruisers want more digital, self-service tools, as long as human hospitality stays intact.
"We are dedicated to offering our guests the ultimate holiday experience across every touchpoint of their cruise. Combining the latest technology with the warm hospitality of our crew, we are enabling guests to personalize their journey like never before, to create an experience which is truly theirs," MSC Cruises CEO Gianni Onorato said in a press release about MSC Concierge.
Digital Remote Check-In reads like the embarkation-day extension of that same philosophy: less waiting, more personalization, and more time enjoying your vacation.
