Navigating a gluten-free lifestyle at sea isn't always easy, but booking a Celiac Cruise vacation offers relief for travelers with celiac disease and other gluten-related conditions.

For many cruisers with gluten-free dietary restrictions, vacations require constant attention to detail at every single meal, even as many cruise lines expand gluten-free offerings and implement stricter protocols to prevent cross-contamination.

Major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean are diligent about accommodating special diets, but managing dietary needs is a shared responsibility between crew and passengers. Cruisers have to be proactive about notifying the cruise line in advance about their needs and confirming their meals were indeed prepared in the manner requested.

Enjoying vacation meals without anxiety and meticulous pre-planning may seem like a pipe dream for many with celiac disease and gluten-relation conditions, but a Celiac Cruise offers the opportunity to do just that. And gluten-free cruising is getting even bigger in 2028.

For the first time, the Celiac Cruise is offering the ultimate, worry-free adventure as it takes over an entire ocean ship for a 100% gluten-free cruise to the British Isles.

Fully gluten-free Celiac Cruise to sail British Isles on Oceania Vista in 2028

In 2018, former healthcare professional Maureen Basye and travel advisor Connie Saunders began organizing charter cruises for gluten-free travelers aboard Royal Caribbean ships with the support of the Celiac Disease Foundation. The inaugural Celiac Cruise set sail in January 2020 with a dedicated gluten-free galley and dining room to ensure a safe environment for more than 500 Celiac Cruise passengers on board.

That first cruise turned into many more organized in partnership with Royal Caribbean, Oceania Cruises, and AmaWaterways. Since its inception, more than 30,000 crew members across those three lines have completed the Celiac Cruise's specialized education and training focused on celiac disease and gluten-free safety protocols.

Now, nearly 10 years since its founding, the Celiac Cruise is chartering an entire ocean cruise ship for the first time for the ultimate gluten-free sailing: a 100% gluten-free British Isles cruise. Sailing May 31 - June 12, 2028 from Southampton, England aboard Oceania Cruises' Oceania Vista, the voyage is a 12-night cruise to England, Ireland, and Scotland that's designed to be a completely worry-free, luxury adventure.

"With Celiac Disease impacting two immediate family members, it brings me great joy on both a personal and professional level that we are able to host the largest-ever completely gluten-free cruise aboard the Oceania Vista, and first-of-its-kind to the British Isles," said Basye. "Giving the Celiac and broader gluten-free communities a means to travel completely worry-free and let vacation feel exactly how it's supposed to-easy-is our entire purpose at Celiac Cruise."

2028 Celiac Cruise will feature 100% gluten-free dining, curated gluten-free excursions

Aboard the 2028 Celiac Cruise to the British Isles, passengers will enjoy gourmet gluten-free dining across Oceania Vista's 11 onboard restaurants crewed by a culinary team renowned for culinary creativity, techniques, and attention to detail.

"Culinary excellence has been at the heart of Oceania Cruises from day one, and ensuring every guest can experience it fully, regardless of dietary need, is essential to that promise," said Oceania Cruises Chief Sales Officer Nathan Hickman. "While Oceania Cruises has long offered gluten-free options across our fleet, working with the Celiac Cruise team deepened our understanding of the celiac community and the unmet need for a truly seamless travel experience. Their deep passion and expertise helped us design and to ultimately deliver what will be a first-of-its-kind, fully dedicated gluten-free voyage."

In addition to working with Oceania to provide crew member training ahead of the sailing, the Celiac Cruise team will review and vet every food label against the menus and perform detailed galley walkthroughs and venue evaluations.

As they sail to charming ports in Ireland; Liverpool, England; Belfast, Northern Ireland; and several destinations in Scotland, passengers will even have the opportunity to take pre-vetted gluten-free excursions in port.

In addition to the 100% gluten-free cruise to the British Isles in 2028, the Celiac Cruise offers a variety of 2026 and 2027 sailings in multiple cruise regions that are partial cruise ship charters. On ocean cruises, Celiac Cruise guests have access to private restaurants that are reserved for the Celiac Cruise, featuring dedicated gluten-free galleys and trained culinary teams. On river cruises offered by the Celiac Cruise, dining across the entire ship is 100% gluten free.
