Dog and cats, puppies and kittens, oh my!

The Humane Society of South Mississippi is bursting at the seams with 442 animals at the shelter and 255 animals living in foster homes, according to a press release from HSSM. Things are about to get hairier — or furrier — with the second wave of kitten season coming up soon.

So HSSM is offering an August Adoption Special throughout the month. Cats, kittens and large dogs in red, yellow and blue pods will be available for the adoption fee of $15, and VIPs and small dogs’ adoption prices have been reduced to 50 percent off. VIP animals are those whose regular adoption fees are over $100, said Katie King, HSSM community engagement specialist.

If you can’t fully commit to adopting an animal but can provide temporary digs, HSSM also is seeking foster homes for them.

“We encourage everyone to spay or neuter their pets to reduce the intake of animals at the shelter,” director of operations Dawn Boob said.

The adoption center is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at 2615 25th Ave.

All adopted animals from HSSM come with spay or neuter surgery, updated vaccinations, updated rabies vaccine, a microchip and engraved identification tag, 30 days of pet health insurance, a free veterinarian visit within seven days of the adoption, heartworm tests for all dogs older than 6 months, a starter bag of food and 10 percent off in HSSM’s BowWow Meow Boutique.

The Jackson County Animal Shelter in Gautier also is experiencing growing pains.

“We have 155 spaces,” adoption coordinator Marilee Mallette said Tuesday afternoon. “The director just messaged me that we just filled the last few cages. So we are at 100 percent.”
