Coast Cooking: Try this Honduran restaurant

This week’s focus of this blog is quirky restaurants, and Pupuseria Doña Blanca in Gulfport just may be the best restaurant in that category.

It is Honduran, and before you visit, it would be a good idea to brush up on your Spanish first. Mama is definitely in the kitchen, and nothing is going to be on the grill until you order.

As you might guess from the name of this place, a pupuseria is a place that sells pupusas, a variant of the tortilla, but it so much more.

They are thick, chewy, handmade tortillas but are bigger than the 6 inch ones to which you are accustomed. Typically they are filled with beans and cheese, but you can also get chicken, pork rinds or a combo that you like best.

The Tacos Hondurenos, or Honduran-style tacos, may be the star of the show. They come stuffed with chicken or shredded beef, but the toppings of cabbage, salsa, onion and cheese bring this dish together in a wonderful way.

There is a lot more to this menu, but it is a strange mixture of Spanish and English, so your best choice just might be to be brave and explore a little bit. Their Facebook page also might be a help. Take the dive, and explore a culinary tradition that is just grand.
