This week I’m blogging about some of my top food picks for the year.

Pizza may not be a very sexy choice, but it is one of the top foods in the nation.

Pizza fast-food places abound, and there are a growing number of pizza places that claim to be artisanal.

The key to making a great pizza is making everything from scratch.

Several local places do that, but only one has generations old recipes from Sicily. You guessed it, I am talking about Sicilian II (1670 Pass Road, Biloxi). My late friend Chef Christo Drake made quite a splash with his restaurant on Pass Road, just outside Gate 7 Keesler AFB, and it continues to do so with pizza lovers and Italian food lovers in general.

But here’s the deal, the pizza on the menu called The Sicilian’s Favorite now represents 70 percent of the restaurant’s pizza sales.

It is the best pizza I have ever had.

It is made to-order, only after you order, when a piece of handmade dough is formed into your pie, topped with homemade sauce, homemade sausage, peperoni, lots of oregano and a few other goodies. Baked in a 700 degree oven, this is the perfect pizza.
