The salsa is the best at this new Pass restaurant and it just gets better from there

I love Mexican food. I always have. I love Mexican American, Tex Mex, and authentic Mexican food. Our beautiful Gulf Coast is peppered with Mexican restaurants. Most are chain restaurants, and the food is pretty much the same. A few are not, and the food is delightfully different. So, when I found out there was a new Mexican restaurant opening in Pass Christian, I knew I needed to try it.

Margaritas is located on North Street in a strip mall. It’s probably a little out of the way for some people, but it is definitely worth the drive. The staff greeted us with kind words and gestures, and we were seated immediately.

Naturally we were served the traditional chips and salsa. It was absolutely the best salsa I have been served in a long time. The tomatoes, onions, and cilantro were fresh, and the chips were warm and crispy. I try not to waste too much time eating the chips and salsa because I don’t want to fill up on them, but the salsa was so invigorating to my taste buds, I had trouble stopping.

The server returned to take our order, and I asked what she would suggest. She asked if I liked spicy things, and I said yes, so she said I needed to try the Pollo a la Mexicana ($9.99). It was a great choice. I had a grilled chicken breast with fresh sautéed onions, tomatoes, and jalapenos on top, served with a side of rice and beans. It was well seasoned and so redolent with memories of the summer I lived in Mexico. The rice was succulent, and the beans were luscious. Their rice and beans are cooked fresh each day, and I could definitely tell.

Presently, the liquor license at Margaritas is pending, but beer is available, and customers are allowed to bring in their own liquor and wine.

I spoke with the owner, Sylvester Dominguez, and his daughter, Maria. This is their first restaurant. While Mr. Dominguez has worked in restaurants most of his life, he has never owned one. Their goal is to provide an environment where people can relax, enjoy themselves, and savor the food they serve. I would say they have accomplished their goal.
