Sheriff Mike Byrd confirmed five dead in a multi-vehicle wreck in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 north of Gautier this afternoon.
"It's bad up there," Byrd said. "One vehicle burned so bad we can't tell what vehicle it is."
There may be as many as six vehicles involved, but police were still sorting out the wreck at 5 p.m.
Byrd said two people died in one car, two in another and one in a different vehicle. The dead includes a child, he said.
Also involved in the wreck was an 18-wheeler, whose driver survived, Byrd said. And a horse trailer carrying several horses was among the wreckage.
At least one of the horses also died in the collision.
