Cheerleaders dance, flip and cheer at JamFest
BILOXI -- More than 65 cheerleading teams from three states brought their best to the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Saturday in hopes of landing a spot in a national competition.
Jam Brands of Louisville, Ky., hosted the Jamfest cheer and dance competition for the second year on the Coast.
"We loved Biloxi last year and we wanted to come back," said Katie Miller, an events planner with Jam Brands. "The venue is great and this is the only Jam Brands-sponsored event in Mississippi."
Miller said the participants ranged from age 3 to seniors in high school.
"We are giving away four Jamfest Super National bids today and that's the big thing to get," Miller said. "We have six of these events all over the country."
Two grand champion trophies were also at stake in the competition.
To win one of the coveted prizes, the participating teams were judged on a three-minute competition. The cheer teams are judged on a number of things including skill level, difficulty of routine, stunts and body positions.
Miller said Saturday's teams came from Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida.
No dance teams entered the dance division, she said.
"We have a special needs division and we let special needs teams come and be a part of the competition and they get medals for competing," Miller said. "We had one special needs team participate in Biloxi."
Jamfest will hold a national competition April 2 in Mobile.
