A Coast Guard search ended safely Monday for a fisherman believed to be lost on the Intracoastal Waterway between Biloxi and Abbeville, Louisiana.

Thanh Tran and a crew member were found with his vessel, anchored west of the Chandeleur Islands. The islands are 35 miles south of Gulfport and just east of Louisiana.

Tran had last been seen Tuesday on a 48-foot fishing vessel, the Tina H, and last spoke with family members by cellphone Thursday, a Coast Guard spokesman said.

His family provided the Coast Guard with a picture of his boat in case it will help find him.

A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station New Orleans spotted the Tina H and hoisted Tran and the other crew member, returning them to the air station.

No injuries were reported but no other details were given.

Aviation Training Center Mobile had sent HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crews to look for him.

His communication with relatives has helped the Coast Guard focus on a general area for search efforts, said Lt. Nicholas Greaver, command duty officer for Coast Guard District Eight.

"This situation highlights the importance of filing a float plan before getting underway, which would help to narrow down the search area required to locate a missing boater," Greaver said.
