Singing River Electric warns of phone scam
JACKSON COUNTY -- Singing River Electric Power Association has reported several small-business owners have been targeted in a phone scam from a man who claimed to be an employee and demanded payment to avoid a service interruption.
The calls are coming from phone numbers with a 228 or 601 area code, spokeswoman Lorri Freeman said.
Anyone who receives a similar call is advised to hang up and call Singing River at (601) 947-4211 or (228) 497-1313. Customers should not redial the number that placed the call and should not give out their debit card or credit card number, she said.
Singing River's customer service representatives do not call members to request payment, Freeman said. Bills are mailed out or email notices are sent as reminders for customers to view their bills online and schedule electronic payments.
