Salute to the Military 5K set for Saturday

The Salute to the Military 5K is coming up Saturday at the Air National Guard Combat Readiness Training Center in Gulfport, set for an 8 a.m. start. Proceeds will go to support Rivers of Recovery, an organization that helps wounded combat veterans through recreational rehabilitation programs.

Last year, the 5K had more than 100 participants and Palazzo presented a $10,000 check to Honor Flight for the encore trip to Washington, D.C.

"It's a pleasure to not only raise funds for Rivers of Recovery so it may continue to support the recovery of thousands of physically and psychologically injured combat veterans, but to also partner with the Combat Readiness Training Center as our race location host. The CRTC provides quality training and validation for all service branches and for a price that is affordable to the Department of Defense," Palazzo said in a statement. "The race serves as an opportunity for the community to support ROR while visiting the base and better understanding its capability."

The CRTC is located at 4715 Hewes Ave. and is operated by the Air National Guard.

This year's Salute to the Military on Oct. 21, will feature General Frank J. Grass, Chief of the National Guard bureau, as the featured speaker.

5K registration fee is $25 for civilians and $20 for military personnel. Walk-ups will be accepted.
